Understanding Weight Loss & Hypothyroidism

What is Metabolic Balance, and how can it support people living with an underactive thyroid?

An underactive thyroid (hypothyroidism) means the thyroid gland is not producing enough thyroid hormone, which plays a central role in metabolism and how the body uses energy. When thyroid hormone is low, the whole metabolism tends to slow down — which is often why generic diet advice doesn’t account for what’s really going on. Common experiences include persistent fatigue that isn’t improved by rest, weight gain despite no real change in diet, thinning hair, brittle nails, dry skin, slower digestion and brain fog. Your GP can diagnose hypothyroidism through blood tests and will advise on appropriate medical care, including whether thyroid medication is needed. It’s essential never to stop or adjust any prescribed medication without guidance from your doctor.

For some people, medication alone doesn’t feel like enough — adrenal strain can affect how the body converts thyroid hormone into its active form, and gut imbalances or inflammation can add further strain on top. This is where our Metabolic Balance® programme comes in: a personalised nutrition plan built from your own detailed blood analysis, rather than a one-size-fits-all diet, drawing on over twenty years of research into nutrition and metabolism. It supports thyroid-friendly nutrition (including selenium, iodine, zinc and iron), works on stabilising blood sugar, takes an anti-inflammatory approach that may be relevant if you have an autoimmune element such as Hashimoto’s, and supports digestion — all built around real food, not rigid rules, alongside your GP and medical team.

Nutritional therapy is not a medical treatment, and we don’t claim to treat, cure or prevent an underactive thyroid. What we offer is personalised nutrition and lifestyle support for your general wellbeing — using ordinary, accessible food and practical guidance.

I walked into Emma’s clinic a broken person — tired, stiff and foggy. After the first couple of weeks it just became a way of life. My energy is back and I no longer crave sugar. Emma has so much knowledge and is so generous with it.

Important: Nutritional therapy is a complementary approach that supports general health and wellbeing. It is not a substitute for medical advice, diagnosis or treatment, and we do not diagnose, treat, cure or prevent an underactive thyroid or any other medical condition. The information on this page is for general education only. Always consult your GP or a qualified healthcare professional about any medical condition or symptom, and before changing your diet, lifestyle or supplements — particularly if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication or under medical care. Never stop or change any prescribed medication without first speaking to your doctor. Individual results vary and no specific outcome can be guaranteed.

Common questions

No — nutritional therapy isn’t a medical treatment or a cure, and we don’t claim to treat, cure or prevent an underactive thyroid. What we can do is help you understand how your individual diet and lifestyle may be affecting how you feel, and build a personalised plan to support your general wellbeing.
Metabolic Balance® is built entirely around your own blood analysis rather than a generic meal plan. We use your results to put together a personalised nutrition programme designed to work with your metabolism, including nutrients that are relevant to thyroid function, alongside the care you receive from your GP.
Weight changes are one of the most common concerns for people living with an underactive thyroid. While we cannot act on the thyroid condition itself, we can look closely at your nutrition, blood sugar balance and lifestyle, and build a personalised plan that supports your energy and wellbeing as part of a wider approach that always puts your GP’s care first.
Yes — we always recommend seeing your GP first if you haven’t already been diagnosed, so they can carry out the right tests and advise on any medical care, including medication. Once your medical picture is clear, we’re happy to talk through whether the Metabolic Balance programme could be a good fit for you.
