Understanding Hypothyroidism

What is an underactive thyroid, and how can nutritional therapy support you?

Hypothyroidism, or an underactive thyroid, is a condition in which the thyroid gland does not produce enough thyroid hormone. This can affect many aspects of how a person feels, including energy, mood, weight and body temperature. Your GP can diagnose hypothyroidism through blood tests and will advise on any prescribed medication — that medical care always comes first, and we never suggest stopping or adjusting it.

Many people living with an underactive thyroid are interested in how their individual diet, everyday habits and nutritional status might be affecting their general wellbeing alongside their medical care. We take time to understand your unique circumstances and build a realistic, personalised nutrition and lifestyle plan that may help support your general wellbeing as you live with this condition.

Nutritional therapy is not a medical treatment, and we don’t claim to treat, cure or prevent an underactive thyroid. What we offer is personalised nutrition and lifestyle support for your general wellbeing — using ordinary, accessible food and practical guidance.

I walked into Emma’s clinic a broken person — tired, stiff and foggy. After the first couple of weeks it just became a way of life. My energy is back and I no longer crave sugar. Emma has so much knowledge and is so generous with it.

Important: Nutritional therapy is a complementary approach that supports general health and wellbeing. It is not a substitute for medical advice, diagnosis or treatment, and we do not diagnose, treat, cure or prevent an underactive thyroid or any other medical condition. The information on this page is for general education only. Always consult your GP or a qualified healthcare professional about any medical condition or symptom, and before changing your diet, lifestyle or supplements — particularly if you are pregnant, breastfeeding, taking medication or under medical care. Never stop or change any prescribed medication without first speaking to your doctor. Individual results vary and no specific outcome can be guaranteed.

Common questions

No — nutritional therapy isn’t a medical treatment or a cure, and we don’t claim to treat, cure or prevent an underactive thyroid. What we can do is help you understand how your individual diet and lifestyle may be affecting how you feel, and build a personalised plan to support your general wellbeing.
Absolutely — we work alongside your GP and medical team, never instead of them. We would never suggest stopping or adjusting any prescribed medication. Nutritional therapy is a complementary support for your general wellbeing, not a replacement for medical care.
Many people living with an underactive thyroid are curious about nutrients such as iodine, selenium, iron and vitamin D, as these are involved in general thyroid and hormonal health. We assess your individual picture — including diet and any relevant test results shared by your GP — rather than applying a one-size-fits-all approach.
Yes. We see clients in person near Harley Street in London and online by video call, so you can access personalised nutritional therapy support from anywhere in the UK.
